William Lapschies is among the first in Oregon to contract the virus, and perhaps the oldest known survivor. His daughter Carolee Brown said “He is fully recovered. He is very perky, and he is very excited.” When asked about her father’s survival, she attributed it to his outlook on life. “He has such an upbeat attitude. He’s never down.”

Ashley Lawrence, A 21-year-old college student, has designed a face mask for the deaf and hard of hearing. She writes, “Those who rely on lip-reading or ASL [American Sign Language] to communicate are often cut off from their source of communication when doctors and nurses don surgical masks,” While they are struggling to meet the high demand, members of the ASL community can still email  dhhmaskproject@gmail.com while supplies last.
